Trip Overview
Most Nepalese take this Gosaikunda trek as a pilgrimage. This journey up through pine forests where red pandas reside to the Hindu holy lakes of Gosainkunda is the most popular add-on to a Langtang Valley trek and a beautiful short trek in its own right.
Although you don’t come face to face with the high mountains, you do get great vistas of the Langtang and Ganesh ranges, as well as traversing the frequently snowbound and difficult Laurebina La. (4,610 m).
There are other approaches to Gosainkunda, but it’s advisable to start with the Langtang Valley trip to acclimate. Then, from near the Doman teahouses, cut across to Gosainkunda and return to Kathmandu via the Helambu Circuit.
Some people travel directly from Dhunche to Gosainkunda, but the elevation gain is significant, and altitude sickness is common. Walking from Helambu to Gosainkunda is a hard uphill slog that promotes altitude difficulties.
