Long before modern paper mills existed, Nepal had already perfected the art of handmade paper.

Made from the bark of the Lokta plant that grows naturally in the Himalayan forests, Lokta paper has been used for centuries to preserve sacred manuscripts, official documents, and works of art. Its remarkable strength, natural texture, and eco-friendly production continue to make it one of Nepal’s most treasured traditional crafts.

At The Peacock Shop, this centuries-old tradition is still practiced every day.

During your visit, you’ll step inside a working paper workshop where local artisans, many of them women from the community transform raw Lokta bark into beautiful handmade paper using techniques passed down through generations.

You’ll witness every stage of the process, from preparing the fibres and beating the pulp to forming, drying, and decorating each sheet by hand.

Then it’s your turn.

Using traditional tools, you’ll create your own sheet of handmade paper and discover why this simple craft continues to connect people with Nepal’s natural heritage.
