From Bhaktapur to the USA – A Journey of Connection & Discovery

After years of dreaming, planning, and postponing, my journey to the United States finally happened—and it turned out to be one of the most enriching experiences of my life. As a mother, entrepreneur, and passionate traveler, this trip was a beautiful mix of personal fulfillment, cultural exposure, and business inspiration.

Washington – A Warm Welcome and Deep Connections

Our America adventure began in Washington, where my husband and I were warmly welcomed by my beloved American grandpa, Mr. Ken, in Maple Valley. Grandpa Ken has visited Nepal over 12 times and supported many Nepalese during difficult times, especially after the devastating earthquake. His love for our country is deeply rooted, and over time, he became a part of our family.

He had invited me to visit the USA back in 2014, but the earthquake changed everything. Now, after marriage, raising two children, and managing two businesses, the time had finally come. From the moment he greeted us with a big smile at the airport, we felt completely at home in his care.

We explored many places around Seattle:

  • Downtown Seattle and the Space Needle
  • Lake Meridian, where we saw his previous lakeside home
  • A serene ferry ride from Anacortes to San Juan Island
  • Mount Rainier National Park, where we played in the snow and soaked in the mountain views
  • Beautiful trails, Kubota Garden, Saltwater State Park, Gig Harbor, and the Franklin Falls hike

During my visit, I also had the opportunity to join my husband at the SLEEP 2025 Conference held at the Seattle Convention Center over four days. It was fascinating to witness such a high-level professional gathering, where experts from around the world came together to discuss advancements in sleep science and healthcare.

Cultural exchange was a highlight. We cooked Nepali food for Grandpa Ken’s family and friends, including his granddaughter, daughter-in-law, and son. I also introduced them to my travel business and encouraged everyone to visit Nepal. Sharing Nepal with them gave me immense pride.

A Quick Trip to Lacey

We were kindly invited by Sabi and Dennis Kayastha to their home in Lacey, where we shared a lovely time together and enjoyed a short nature walk around the nearby wetlands. A simple, refreshing break during our Washington stay.

Oregon – Reunions and Scenic Drives

A 5-hour drive took us to Portland,Oregon another stunning state. We visited Mr. Andrew Leonard and Nani Leonard, former colleagues who warmly hosted us. On the way back, our plan to see Mount St. Helens didn’t fully materialize due to road closures, the journey itself was filled with beautiful views and heartfelt conversations. On our return, Grandma Mau welcomed us back to Maple Valley, and we felt like cherished family.

Texas – Road Trips & Family Tales

Next stop: Dallas, where I reunited with my cousin brother and sister after 9 years. They welcomed me into their beautiful new home in Dallas, treating me to authentic Nepali meals that brought back the taste of home. I was fascinated by the wide roads and impressive flyovers seamlessly connecting multiple cities.

My trip became even more special when my sister, Bimala, arrived from London with her family. Our cousin organized a 5-day road trip across Texas with nine of us packed in a Hiace van—an adventure I’ll never forget.

Highlights included:

  • Downtown Houston Overnight : Fireworks on July 4th,
  • Visits to the Water Wall, Aquarium, and NASA Space Center
  • An overnight stay near Galveston Beach
  • The historic charm of San Antonio, guided river rides, and city tours
  • A thrilling day at SeaWorld—from water rides to dolphin shows, it was a joy for kids and adults alike
  • A big family BBQ in Dallas, where I tried squid and crab for the first time.

Los Angeles,California – From Hollywood, Boulevards to Santa Monica

On July 9, we flew to Los Angeles. Initially unsure about the city’s hype, my brother-in-law Anthony insisted I experience it—and I’m glad he did. We explored Hollywood through a fun bus tour, taking in the sights, and strolled along the iconic Walk of Fame, spotting the stars we’ve only seen on screen.

Santa Monica Beach was the highlight for me—truly the best beach I’ve visited. Watching the waves roll in, playing in the tides with the kids, and feeling the Pacific breeze was pure joy. It was a perfect mix of fun, relaxation, and unforgettable memories with family. And stayed at a stunning hotel ( Biltmore) in downtown LA. It was a fast-paced but exciting part of our journey, especially for the kids.

Back to Washington – One Last Magical Day

Returning to Seattle felt like coming back home. Grandpa Ken picked us up and took us to a unique pizza spot where we could customize everything to our taste—a fun and delicious experience!

With one day left, I recommended Mount Rainier to my sister and her family. It turned out to be the perfect farewell destination—snow melting into rivers, breathtaking views, and countless photos that couldn’t capture the full beauty of the moment.

That afternoon, we had our final Nepali lunch (courtesy of a Nepali Sherpa restaurant) and a heartfelt BBQ dinner at home. On 12th July, 2025 saying goodbye to Grandpa Ken, Grandma Mau, my sister, Anthony, Noah, and Leah was emotional. But we left with promises of future reunions and full hearts.

Reflections

America is vast, beautiful, and advanced in many ways. I was amazed by its infrastructure, cleanliness, and diversity. Yet, what I missed most was the warmth of joint families and the deep connection we share in Nepalese society.

This trip reminded me of the power of connection, love, and travel. I’m incredibly thankful to everyone who made it possible—Grandpa Ken, Grandma Mau, Bimala, Anthony, Noah and Leah, Unisha and Ronish, and everyone who hosted, helped, and shared their time with me. Your kindness made my America visit so meaningful.
