Rara Lake

Rara Lake is one of the high-altitude freshwater lakes located in the mountain region of Nepal. It is located in the remote northwest region of Nepal, the Mugu District, at an elevation of 2,990 meters (9,810 feet) above sea level. Rara Lake is the largest lake in Nepal, with a surface area of 10.8 square kilometers (4.2 square miles).

The lake is surrounded by the Rara National Park, which is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna including musk deer, Himalayan black bear, and red panda.

Rara Lake is not just a naturally beautiful place but also has religious significance. The lake is considered a sacred site by the local Thakuri people, who believe that the lake was created by Lord Vishnu.

Moreover, Rara Lake is a popular trekking destination in Nepal, and it takes about 3-4 days to trek from the town of Jumla to the lake. There are several lodges and guesthouses around Rara Lake where visitors can stay overnight. However, it’s important to note that facilities are basic and electricity may be limited.

Best season to visit Rara Lake

The best time to visit Rara Lake is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these seasons, the weather is generally mild and dry, and the skies are clear, making it easier to enjoy the stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

In the spring, the area around Rara Lake is particularly beautiful as the trees and flowers start to bloom, creating a colorful landscape.

In the autumn, the foliage of the trees turns golden and the weather is cool and clear, making it an ideal time for trekking.

It’s important to note that during the winter months (December to February), the temperature in the region can drop below freezing, making it difficult to trek or even access the lake. Similarly, during the monsoon season (June to August), the area receives heavy rainfall, which can cause landslides and make trekking hazardous. Therefore, it’s best to avoid visiting Rara Lake during monsoon.

How to reach Rara Lake?

You can reach Rara Lake by various means of Transportation. You can either fly to Jumla and start your trek toward Rara or take a jeep ride to go to Rara.

It’s important to note that the trek to Rara Lake involves high-altitude trekking and requires a certain level of physical fitness. It’s also important to acclimatize to the altitude before starting the trek to avoid altitude sickness. Therefore, it’s recommended to consult with a travel agency or a trekking guide for a safe and enjoyable trip to Rara Lake.
